Marie C. Brown, M.A., Diagnostic Testing and Tutoring Center has been in existence since February, 1983. We offer Southern California tutoring and testing services for students from preschool through adults. Learning disabled learners are welcome. Students with special needs require more specialized help therefore an application is required of all new students.
Testing is also available if needed. Generally most students in a K to 12 setting are tested annually if not more often. However, if such test results are needed we can provide proper needs assessments.

Tutoring is done on a one on one basis. Marie does the tutoring herself and has for the past 26 years. Marie began this center to help students with reading, math and writing skills. She is an advocate for all learners wanting to better their future and their present abilities.
Levels of need are determined by the skills and age of the student. Generally, a young student may need reading which entails basic skills in phonics, letter and word recognition. We offer adult literacy tutoring for older students that may require work on becoming more skilled readers such as in reading comprehension, points of view and comparisons and contrasts of literary materials.
Los Angeles Math tutoring can be done in beginning computations and math reasoning problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Older students may need work with fractions, decimals, percents and beginning algebra. Marie also tutors Algebra and Geometry. Now with California requiring that 8th graders complete Algebra before entering High School, students in middle school or junior high may need this extra tutoring assistance. Word or application problems are usually the difficulty encountered by all students from grades K to 12. Math requires an understanding of math vocabulary which Marie insists students learn in order to become math literate.
Writing is a difficult area for both beginning and advanced students. Marie teaches the way in which to organize a draft of a paragraph, essay, letter, narrative or comparison and contrast of a literary piece to another literary piece. Thinking Maps help with this organization which includes webbing and organizing thoughts and beginning sentences and paragraphs. Marie loves to write especially editing and creating stories with art which captures the reader’s interest and heart.
Testing can be done for an additional charge depending on need, age and assessment required. Write-ups and letters can be sent, with written permission, to the student’s school or employer.
Basic fees are fifty dollars ($50) with initial application which is one page. Tutoring sessions are one hour at twenty-five dollars ($25) each hour. All tutoring is done at Marie’s office by appointment only. Please phone or email Marie with your request for an application or for questions/information.
